DR. HOLLY ANN HALE
October 28, 1961 – April 28, 2013
On July 18, 2013, the members of the Democratic Women’s Club of Bay County (DWCBC) dedicated their headquarters to the memory of Dr. Holly Hale in honor of her excellence as a community activist and champion of Democratic principles.
Holly graduated from Bay High School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Ancient History from the University of Alabama, a Master’s Degree in English Education from Florida State University, and a Doctorate Degree in 19th Century American Literature and Rhetoric Composition from Louisiana State University.
Holly’s professional background included traditional teaching positions at Bay High School, Gulf Coast State College, and Louisiana State University. She taught English as a second language for Kyungpook University of South Korea, Aramco Oil Company of Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia Airlines, African American Institute of Angola, Exxon Mobil, and Chevron Oil Company. Her academic activities included authoring papers and participating in research, notably joining the Leon Levi Expedition of Harvard University, excavating a Bronze Age site in Israel.
Since childhood, Holly had collected shells and was an active member of the Gulf Coast Shell Club. She was an explorer and adventurer at heart and her travels had taken her to five continents and thirty-four countries. She served Unity Church as a board member and Sunday school teacher before joining the Unitarian Fellowship. Holly was a member of the Democratic Women’s Club and the Democratic Executive Committee of Bay County. She was appointed by the chair of the Florida Democratic Party to the position of Northwest Florida Panhandle Fundraising Chair.
Holly was an early supporter of the concept of a permanent headquarters for the DWCBC – a home for the work of building and sustaining the Florida Democratic Party. Her vision of what could be accomplished in this space and her tireless efforts at fundraising and member recruitment helped turn a dream into a reality. Holly’s talents, enthusiasm, and inspiration contributed greatly to the expanded effectiveness and higher visibility of the DWCBC.
It seems particularly fitting that wherever the DWCBC labors on behalf of Democratic principles – the center of activities designed to achieve the promising future her leadership helped imagine – should forever be known as the Dr. Holly Hale Center.
